![]() But that was fine with Roo - because part of his mission was to change people’s minds about pit bulls. It seemed like a terrible idea large and heavy with thick muscles that can make them look less than graceful, pit bulls are everything that most Frisbee dogs aren’t. Once Wallace made it home, Roo knew the dog needed a mission, and serendipity led them to the world of competitive dog Frisbee. Roo and his wife franticly fought to keep Wallace alive until they could return home to adopt him - even though they already had two dogs. While on his honeymoon, Roo learned that Wallace was about to be put down. A scientist and shelter volunteer, Roo could immediately see that Wallace was something special. Then Andrew “Roo” Yori entered the picture. Today, Wallace is a champion but in the summer of 2005, he was living in a shelter, a refugee from a suspicious pit bull-breeding operation. ![]()

Marx’s discovery was, Engels went on, that “mankind must first of all eat, drink, have shelter and clothing, before it can pursue politics, science, art, religion, etc.” First among them he placed Marx’s discovery of “the law of development of human history,” a discovery he compared with Darwin’s discovery of the law of development of organic nature. ![]() Standing by Karl Marx’s grave, Friedrich Engels spoke to the assembled mourners of Marx’s achievements. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pissing in the Snow departs from the academic prudery that until recently has restricted the amount of bawdy folklore available for study. Unfortunately, in the 1950s when Randolph published several collection of Ozark tales, the material in this volume was considered unprintable. Randolph's reputation rests on the massive accumulation of folksong, folktale, and ballad materials he collected during forty years of living and working in the Ozarks. He is a national treasure, like Mark Twain. And Gershon Legman, the world's leading scholar of sexual and scatological humor, has called Randolph "the greatest and most successful field collector and regional folklorist that America ever had." In Legman's estimation, "We have no one else like him. His Ozark corpus is "the best known single body of regional folklore in the United States," according to Richard Dorson, director of the Folklore Institute at Indiana University. Vance Randolph has long been an undeniable presence on the American folklore scholarship scene. ![]() ![]() Sarah Pinsker eases you in to an unexpected future in her short story, Sooner or Later Everything Falls Into the Sea. Face it when most people get power it goes to their heads. No matter what political opinions all end up becoming dictators for the "common good" to help out the people. I don't care which side of politics you are on, this quote is true. Corrupt people in power with their hypothetical rhetoric continue to despoil what is left of civilization. (Plus certain books we read that destroy our hearts and we never recover nor find a book as good.) While I still love dystopian novels, some just fall short of my parameter.
